Where to Keep Coins Between the Exchange and the Sportsbook

Guide · Wallets

Coins bought for betting have to sit somewhere between the exchange and the sportsbook cashier. Whether that place is an exchange account or a wallet you control decides who can freeze them, who can lose them, and how many fees each deposit costs.

A crypto wallet for betting has one job: to hold coins between the exchange where you bought them and the sportsbook cashier where you spend them. The brand on the app matters less than one question, which is who holds the keys. Everything else on this page, from recovery phrases to network choice, follows from that answer.

Exchange account or self-custody wallet

An exchange account looks like a wallet. It shows balances, has a send button and produces addresses. The difference is underneath. Ethereum.org describes it directly: an exchange links your funds to a username and password, and you are trusting the exchange with custody. A self-custody wallet works the other way round. The provider never holds your coins; it gives you a window onto them and the tools to move them, and the keys stay with you.

Neither is wrong. An exchange is the shorter road for a one-off deposit. A self-custody wallet suits someone who bets every week and wants the betting money to sit somewhere the exchange's rules do not reach. Ethereum.org adds the price of that: you are responsible for keeping the keys safe, and there is no helpdesk that can reset them. The step-by-step side of both routes is in the deposit guide.

The recovery phrase and where it lives

When you create a self-custody wallet, it shows a list of words. Trezor's explainer of the BIP39 standard describes the usual length as 12, 18 or 24 words, generated from a random number, and the phrase restores the wallet's private keys on another device. Ethereum.org calls it the only way to recover the wallet.

That cuts both ways. Anyone who reads the words can rebuild the wallet on their own device and send the coins wherever they like. So:

  • Write it on paper, in order, and check each word against the screen.
  • Keep it offline. No photo, no cloud note, no email to yourself. Bitcoin.org's security page recommends keeping recovery information in a physical, secure place.
  • Store two copies in two places, so one fire or one burst pipe does not end the wallet.
  • Never type it into a website. No sportsbook, exchange or support agent needs it. A deposit needs only an address; a withdrawal needs only an address of yours.

The last rule matters most: a request for the words, however official it looks, is a request for the coins.

Hot and cold wallets

A hot wallet runs on a device connected to the internet, a phone app or a browser extension. A cold wallet keeps the keys off the network, usually on a hardware device built for nothing else. Bitcoin.org's advice translates neatly to betting: keep small amounts on a phone or computer for everyday use and the rest somewhere safer.

For a bettor that means two pots. The bankroll you plan to deposit this week sits in a hot wallet, ready to send. Anything you are not planning to bet with sits cold, or stays out of crypto entirely. A hardware wallet adds a step to each deposit, since every transaction has to be confirmed on the device, which is a nuisance for weekly betting and an advantage for savings.

Some well-known names, with how each describes itself on its own site. Trezor calls its device a hardware wallet that keeps keys offline and can be restored from a backup on another Trezor (trezor.io). Ledger describes its devices as signers that keep private keys offline (ledger.com). MetaMask calls itself a self-custody wallet supporting BTC, ETH and SOL among others, with a phone app and a browser extension (metamask.io). Trust Wallet presents itself as self-custody too, with pages for Bitcoin, TRON, TON and XRP (trustwallet.com). None of this is a ranking; check the coin and network you need before installing anything.

Multi-network wallets and the network you send on

Wallets such as MetaMask hold coins from several blockchains in one app. That is convenient and it is where a crypto wallet for betting most often catches people out. USDT held on TRON and USDT held on Ethereum show up as two separate balances, because they are two separate tokens on two ledgers. When you press send, the wallet uses the network of the balance you send from. It has no idea which network the sportsbook expects. Only the cashier says that.

Three things to check on every send:

  1. The network label on the balance matches the network the cashier shows next to its address.
  2. There is gas in the wallet. Ethereum's documentation states that gas fees have to be paid in ether, so a wallet holding only USDT on Ethereum cannot move it until some ETH is added.
  3. Any tag or memo the cashier shows has a field to go into. If the wallet's send screen has no such field, use a different wallet for that coin.

Our USDT networks explainer compares the networks the same token runs on.

Why an exchange may ask about a transfer

Exchanges run their own compliance. The terms of at least one large exchange let it make whatever inquiries it considers necessary to guard against financial crime, and to reject or limit any withdrawal at any time; the same terms name gambling among restricted conduct. Exchanges differ, and not every one acts on a transfer to a betting address. But it is possible that a withdrawal to a sportsbook draws a question, a hold, or a refusal.

Two practical points follow. Read your own exchange's terms before the first transfer, not after a hold. And answer any question it sends truthfully: the exchange's terms, not the explanation, decide the outcome. A self-custody wallet changes who holds the coins once they arrive; it does not change what the exchange sees when you withdraw to it.

Matching the wallet to a sportsbook cashier

A crypto wallet for betting is only useful if the coins in it are ones the cashier takes. The common ground of most self-custody wallets is bitcoin, ether, USDT and solana. Wild.io, Rainbet, CoinPoker and Rakebit all list those four. Vave lists BTC, ETH, USDT, LTC, DOGE and TON, so a wallet holding TON or litecoin has a home there. The Solana betting sites page goes into the SOL side.

Whichever wallet you settle on, decide how much of it is for betting before you open the cashier. The responsible gambling page lists ways to hold that line.

A wallet holding USDC or BNB needs a cashier that names the same coin and network: the USDC betting sites and BNB betting sites boards list them. Wallets that live inside a chat app have their own risks, covered on crypto betting on Telegram.

Do I need a crypto wallet for betting, or is an exchange enough?
An exchange is enough to send a deposit: its withdrawal screen can pay a sportsbook address directly. A self-custody wallet adds one transfer and one fee, and in return the coins are held by your keys rather than by the exchange.
Will the sportsbook ever need my recovery phrase?
No. A deposit needs only the address the cashier shows, and a withdrawal needs only an address of yours. Anyone who asks for the recovery phrase, under any pretext, is asking for the coins.
Is a hardware wallet worth it for betting money?
For the bankroll you move every week, usually not: each deposit would need the device. Bitcoin.org suggests keeping small sums on a phone or computer and the rest somewhere safer, and a hardware wallet suits that second part.
Why did my wallet refuse to send USDT on Ethereum?
Most likely there was no ether in it for the fee. Ethereum's documentation states that gas has to be paid in ETH, so a wallet holding only USDT on Ethereum cannot move it until some ETH is added.
