Lay off an open bet: the stake that settles it either way

Tool · Hedging

You hold a bet and the price against it has moved. The calculator finds the stake on the other side that leaves the same result whoever wins, shows a stake that only wins back the original, and lets you test any amount in between.

A hedge bet calculator is for the moment after a bet has gone well: you hold an open position, the price on the other side has shortened, and you want to know what stake against yourself would settle the matter whichever way it ends. Enter the stake and odds you already have and the price now on offer against them. The tool prints the stake that locks an equal result, the result itself, and a table of what each outcome pays.

When a hedge is worth considering

A hedge makes sense only when the price has moved in your favour since you placed the bet, so that the opposite side is now short. Typical cases:

In each case you trade the upside of the original bet for certainty. The hedge does not change the chance of anything; it changes how the outcomes pay.

How to use the hedge bet calculator

Fill in three boxes and, if they apply, two optional ones.

  1. Original stake: what you put down, in any unit, USDT, BTC or anything else.
  2. Original odds: the price you took, in decimal, fractional or American format.
  3. Odds against it now: the price currently offered on the outcome or outcomes your bet does not cover.
  4. Cost of funding the hedge: network fees, if you have to move coins to another account to place the second bet.
  5. Your own hedge stake: leave it blank for the equal-result stake, or type an amount to see what a partial or larger hedge does.

If any box contains text that is not a number or a valid price, the hedge bet calculator says which one and gives an example instead of printing broken figures.

The formula, with a worked example

The equal-result stake comes from one line: hedge stake = original stake × original odds ÷ hedge odds. The logic is that the hedge must return, if it wins, exactly what the original bet would have returned.

An example, with prices that are illustrations rather than quotes: 50 USDT on an outsider at 4.00 in a two-way final. The outsider is now favourite, and the price on the other side has shortened to 1.60. These are the defaults the calculator opens with.

  • Hedge stake: 50 × 4.00 ÷ 1.60 = 125 USDT
  • Return either way: 200 USDT
  • Total staked: 50 + 125 = 175 USDT
  • Result locked in: 200 − 175 = 25 USDT
If this happensOriginal betHedge betNet
Your original pick wins+150−125+25
The other side wins−50+75+25

Put 2 into the funding box and both rows drop to +23, because the fee is paid whatever happens. If the price against you had been 3.50 rather than 1.60, the same formula gives a hedge of 57.14 USDT and a locked result of 92.86 USDT: the shorter the other side, the larger the stake you need and the smaller the result you keep.

Partial hedges and covering the stake

An equal result is only one choice. The hedge bet calculator also prints the stake that wins back exactly what you first put down: original stake ÷ (hedge odds − 1). In the example that is 50 ÷ 0.60 = 83.33 USDT. If the other side wins, you are level; if your pick wins, you keep 150 − 83.33 = 66.67 USDT. You give up part of the upside and remove the downside.

Any amount in between is a matter of taste. Type 100 into the last box, with the 2 USDT funding cost still entered, and the table shows +48 if your pick wins and +8 if it loses. The more you hedge, the flatter the two rows become, until they meet at the equal-result stake.

Three-way markets and accumulators

The hedge price has to cover everything your original bet does not. On a two-way market that is one price. On a football match result it is two: a bet on the home side loses to the draw as well as to an away win. The hedge then has to be a double chance on draw-or-away, or a lay of the home side at an exchange. Backing only the away win leaves the draw uncovered, and the “locked” result is not locked at all. The page on the crypto betting exchange model explains how a lay covers every other outcome in one bet.

Accumulators reduce to a single. Once the earlier legs have won, a slip is a bet at its combined price on the last leg. An example: a 10 USDT treble at a combined 12.00 with two legs through. Enter 10 as the stake and 12.00 as the odds; against a price of 1.45 on the last leg failing, the hedge bet calculator gives 82.76 USDT, a return of 120 either way, and a locked result of 27.24 USDT.

What a coin cashier changes

If the hedge goes on at the same sportsbook, the balance is already there and nothing moves on chain. If the better price is at a second book, the coins have to travel, and the transfer has two costs.

The first is the fee, which belongs in the funding box. The second is time. On bitcoin, a transaction paying less than the fee the network is currently prioritising can wait considerably longer for its first confirmation, and a sportsbook usually credits a deposit only after the confirmations its cashier requires. A price that justified the hedge when you sent the coins may be gone when they arrive, especially during a live game. Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed either, so a deposit sent to the wrong network or address is not a delay but a loss.

The unit matters too. If the original bet sits in a BTC balance and the hedge in USDT, the result is locked in two different coins, and a move in the bitcoin price after settlement shifts one side and not the other. Hedging in the same coin as the original keeps the locked figure honest. Picking a crypto bookmaker that takes the coin you already hold removes the conversion step.

When not to hedge

Hedging has a price, and it is easy to pay it twice.

  • The hedge is a bet with its own margin. Locking a result means paying the book's overround on the second stake, so a hedge on a bet you still rate as good value usually costs more than it saves.
  • A cash-out offer is a hedge priced by the operator. Compare it with the locked figure from the hedge bet calculator: if the offer is lower, the gap is what the button costs.
  • Live prices move faster than transfers. In live crypto betting the hedge price can change between typing and confirming; the slip will show the accepted price, which may be shorter.
  • Fight markets can settle on outcomes neither side covers. In crypto UFC betting a draw or a no contest can void or lose a two-way bet; check the rules before treating a two-way hedge as complete.

For the step beyond hedging, when two books disagree enough to cover every outcome from the start, the arbitrage calculator does the split. The comparison of crypto bet sites on the home page reads each operator's cashier, which decides how quickly a hedge can be funded.

How do I work out a hedge stake?
Multiply your original stake by its odds and divide by the price now offered against it. A 50 USDT bet at 4.00 hedged at 1.60 needs 50 × 4.00 ÷ 1.60 = 125 USDT on the other side; either result then returns 200 USDT and leaves 25 USDT profit.
Can a hedge lose money?
Yes. If your selection has become less likely since you bet, the price on the other side is shorter than when you started, and the equal-result stake fixes a loss. With the same 50 USDT at 4.00 and the other side at 1.20, the locked result is minus 16.67 USDT. The hedge then limits the damage; it does not create a profit.
How do I hedge the last leg of an accumulator?
Treat the slip as a single at its combined price. A 10 USDT treble at 12.00 with two legs won is a 10 USDT bet at 12.00 on the last leg. Against a price of 1.45, a hedge of 82.76 USDT locks 27.24 USDT whichever way that leg goes.
Is cash-out the same as hedging?
It does the same job inside one sportsbook, at a price the operator sets. Compare the cash-out offer with the locked result from the calculator; if the offer is lower, the gap is what the convenience costs.
Should I hedge at a different crypto sportsbook?
Only when its price is good enough to cover the cost of moving coins there. Enter the network fees in the funding box: they come off the locked result on both sides, and a deposit still waiting for confirmations cannot be used while the price moves.
