The vig, worked out: how much of every price the bookmaker keeps

Guide · Strategy

Vig, short for vigorish, is the bookmaker's built-in charge for taking a bet. It never appears as a fee on the slip; it hides inside the odds. Here it is pulled out with the arithmetic for two-way and three-way markets, multiples and stakes held in coin.

What is vig? It is the bookmaker's commission for taking your bet, and instead of appearing as a line on the slip it is folded into the odds. A coin toss should pay 2.00; a sportsbook offers 1.91 on both sides, and the gap between those two numbers is the vig. Once you can measure it in a few seconds, you can compare any two boards on the same match.

What is vig, written as one sum

Every decimal price converts to an implied probability: 1 divided by the odds. A price of 1.91 implies 52.4 per cent; a price of 3.30 implies 30.3 per cent. In a fair market, the implied probabilities of all outcomes would add up to exactly 100 per cent. In a bookmaker's market they add up to more.

Two measures come out of that total, and both get called vig:

The second figure is the one that answers the question a bettor really asks: out of every 100 units staked here, how many does the book expect to keep?

Two-way markets: the -110 example

The classic case is a point spread or a fight quoted at -110 on both sides, which is 1.91 in decimal (more precisely 1.9091). Each side implies 52.38 per cent; together they make 104.76 per cent.

Look at it from the bookmaker's ledger. One customer stakes 110 on side A, another stakes 110 on side B. The book holds 220. Whichever side wins collects 110 back plus 100 profit, so 210 leaves the book. It keeps 10, which is 10 ÷ 220 = 4.55 per cent. The two methods agree.

This is the price structure behind most spreads and totals in crypto NFL betting, and a fight with no draw works the same way, as the crypto UFC betting page shows on method and round markets.

Uneven prices follow the same sum. An example with a clear favourite:

Side (example)Decimal oddsImplied probability
Favourite1.5066.67%
Underdog2.6038.46%
Total105.13%

Overround 5.13 per cent; margin on turnover 1 − 1 ÷ 1.0513 = 4.88 per cent.

Three-way markets: home, draw, away

Football match odds add a third outcome. An example, not a quote:

Outcome (example)Decimal oddsImplied probabilityFair price, margin removed
Home2.4041.67%2.50
Draw3.3030.30%3.44
Away3.1032.26%3.23
Total104.23%

Overround 4.23 per cent; margin on turnover about 4.06 per cent. The fair column multiplies each price by 1.0423, which spreads the vig across the three outcomes in proportion to their prices.

Notice how small the visible difference is. The home price moves from a fair 2.50 to 2.40, which cuts the return on a winning slip by 4 per cent, a gap most bettors never stop to check. Across hundreds of bets it decides whether a bankroll drifts down slowly or quickly.

Where the vig actually sits

Proportional removal is a convention, not a fact about the market. Bookmakers often shade longer prices more than short ones, because casual money likes underdogs. An example with a heavy favourite at 1.25 and an outsider at 3.80 shows how wide the uncertainty is:

  • Implied total: 80.00 + 26.32 = 106.32 per cent.
  • Proportional removal gives fair prices of 1.33 and 4.04.
  • If the whole margin sat on the outsider, its fair price would be 1 ÷ 0.20 = 5.00.

The truth usually lies between the two. That is why a value betting approach that relies on removing the margin works best on markets with two close prices, where the method matters least.

Vig on parlays and accumulators

Here is what is vig at its most expensive: a multiple. The margins on each leg multiply. Take four legs at 1.91, each on an outcome that is truly 50 per cent:

  • Offered combined price: 1.9091 × 1.9091 × 1.9091 × 1.9091 = 13.28.
  • Fair combined price: 2.00 × 2.00 × 2.00 × 2.00 = 16.00.
  • You receive 13.28 ÷ 16.00 = 83 per cent of a fair payout, a margin of about 17 per cent.

A single at the same prices costs 4.55 per cent. Four legs cost almost four times as much, and the gap widens with every leg added.

Reading the vig before you bet

A quick routine for any market:

  1. Write down every price in the market, including the draw where there is one.
  2. Convert each to 1 ÷ odds and add them.
  3. Subtract 1 for the overround, or compute 1 − 1 ÷ total for the margin on turnover.
  4. Repeat on a second board and bet where the total is lower, if the price you want is there.

Vig when the stake is a coin

The vig is charged in whatever unit the bet is placed in. At a 4.55 per cent margin, a 20 USDT stake carries an expected cost of about 0.91 USDT, whatever happens to that particular slip. In bitcoin the cost is a fraction of a coin, and the coin's own price then moves the result in your home currency on top of the margin.

Network fees are a separate charge on top of the vig, paid when coins enter and leave the cashier. On a small balance they can be larger than the margin on a whole week of bets, so it pays to move funds less often and in larger amounts.

Prediction markets show the same cost in another form: contracts priced between 0 and 1, where the gap between buying and selling a contract plays the role of the vig. The prediction markets crypto betting sites page sets the two models side by side. For the wider comparison of operators on coins and payout windows, the main board of the best crypto betting sites remains the starting point.

What is vig in sports betting?
It is the share of the money staked on a market that the bookmaker expects to keep whatever the result. You find it by converting each price to an implied probability (1 divided by the decimal odds), adding them up and seeing how far the total goes above 100 per cent.
Is vig the same as overround?
They describe the same thing on two scales. Overround is the excess over 100 per cent in the implied probabilities, for example 4.76 per cent on a market at 1.91 and 1.91. The margin as a share of turnover is 1 minus 1 divided by the total, here 4.55 per cent. Both are called vig in everyday use.
Why is the vig higher on three-way markets?
It is not always higher, but a draw adds a third price, and each price is a place for the bookmaker to shade the odds. Sum all three implied probabilities to see the real figure for that match.
Does a parlay carry more vig than a single?
Yes. Each leg's margin multiplies with the next. Four legs at 1.91 on fair 2.00 chances pay about 83 per cent of the fair combined price, a margin near 17 per cent.
Does paying in crypto change the vig?
No. The margin is in the odds, and the odds are the same whether the stake is in USDT or bitcoin. Network fees on deposits and withdrawals are a separate cost that sits on top.
